Yasuda Knowledge Base: Laparo-Endoscopic Single Site (LESS)
2023.07.21

The formal English name for single port laparoscopic surgery (LESS) is "laparo-endoscopic single site." Until now, laparoscopic surgery has continued to evolve. It began with simple tubal ligation procedures and has now advanced to allow for the performance of precise and complex cancer staging surgeries using laparoscopy.
The method of performing surgery by making three or four small holes (each wound approximately 0.5 to 1 centimeter) in the abdomen to insert a camera and surgical instruments has evolved into a technique that now uses a single incision (wound approximately 1.5 to 2.0 centimeters) to place both the camera and surgical instruments. Currently, single-port laparoscopic surgery is applicable to most gynecological surgeries, such as ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and hysterectomies.
All the patients are female, and because they care about the beauty of their wounds and pain, gynecologists are actively attempting various minimally invasive surgeries. In this single-incision laparoscopic surgery, a small hole measuring 1.5 to 2.0 centimeters is made above the navel. The wound is located in the indentation of the navel, and after healing, it becomes concealed within the navel, making it less visible and leaving almost no trace.
Regarding pain from surgery, with single-port laparoscopic surgery, only a small incision of 1.5 to 2.0 centimeters is made at the navel. Because there is less damage, the pain is also reduced. As the pain lessens, the recovery time after the surgery shortens, leading to a reduction in hospital stay and allowing patients to return to their daily activities more quickly.
